Art dealer Rubens

In the second half of the thirties, the Jewish art dealer Levie Rubens (1872-1942) moved his firm from Enschede to The Hague and opened a shop in the Lange Voorhout. During the war, Dr F.M. Huebner was appointed as administrator (Verwalter) of the firm and on 1 October 1942 Rubens, his wife and his daughter were sent to Auschwitz extermination camp, where they were murdered shortly after. His only son, Hartog Rubens (1902-1979), survived the war and re-established his father's shop at a different address in The Hague after the war. There are a number of pottery and porcelain objects in the NK collection that certainly or probably belonged to the trading stock of Levie Rubens. These were sold from the stock after the appointment of the Verwalter or even after Rubens' death. All attempts to contact the heirs of Levie Rubens have been unsuccessful, seeing as Hartog Rubens never married and died without a will and no close family members could be found.
